About
Chadwell Animal Hospital opened its doors in September 2003. It was a collaborative effort by Dr. Keith Gold and Ruby Schaupp (a husband and wife team). Both had worked at various animal hospitals in Baltimore County. This would be the first time they would join forces, each bringing their experiences, ideas and skills to create a veterinary hospital with a professional environment that would be efficient, always educational, compassionate and fun! The Chadwell name was derived from their first dog, who in turn, was named after a town on the island of St. Kitts. Chadwell was adopted from this island as a puppy. It was in his memory, that of a resilient, loyal and brave companion that the practice was named. The hospital is a 5500 square foot facility with 4 exam rooms, 2 surgical suites and a surgical prep room. There are separate dog, cat, and exotic wards, and an isolation room with it's own ventilation. The intensive care unit is located just off the treatment area where those patients are monitored continuously throughout the day. There is a special procedures room for radiographs, endoscopy, and ultrasound.Surgical ServicesWe perform all elective surgical procedures such as spays, neuters, and declaws, as well as most major medical soft tissue surgeries such as intestinal resections, cystotomies, splenectomies, etc.Pain management is an important part of our patient's recovery. There are many different available methods such as injectable medications, tablets or oral suspensions, topical and local anesthetics, epidurals, pain patches, and use of the therapy laser.Cryosurgery (freezing of tissue) and Radiosurgery (cauterizing tissue) are also available when deemed necessary. We participate in the HASP and SNAP programs for feline and canine spays and neuters.Surgical CO2 LaserThis technology utilizes a laser beam to vaporize cells in tissue, thereby "cutting" and coagulating simultaneously. There are many advantages to using the laser during surgery. It provides excellent hemostasis (controls bleeding) , cuts tissue while sealing nerve endings thereby decreasing post op pain,We, at Chadwell Animal Hospital, feel this is the only way declaws in cats should be performed should a client choose this procedure for their pet. The laser is also used routinely for mastectomies, skin growth removals, ear tumors, lip surgery, amputations, etc.AnesthesiaThe practice houses 6 gas anesthetic machines and 2 anesthetic chambers. A centrally located oxygen and vacuum system supplies these machines. Safety is our priority. We cater to so many different species of animal that each anesthetic protocol is tailored to the specific individual's needs. We utilize pulse oximetry (measure oxygen levels in the blood), an EKG, blood pressure monitoring (when indicated), and heating pads during each surgical procedure.DentistryThis includes routine scaling and polishing of teeth, minor and major surgical extractions, and digital dental X-rays. During the procedure, a warm air blanket is used to cover the patient's body to maintain normal body temperature while under anesthesia. This facilitates a quicker recovery. Exotic animal dental procedures are also routinely performed in rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, ferrets, etc. Some of these may include cheek teeth filing, incisor and or molar extraction, oral surgery such as jaw abscesses and tumors.Endoscopy/Colonoscopy/Rhinoscopy/Bronchoscopy These 4 procedures can be performed with the endoscope. This instrument is used to visualize and obtain samples for culture, cytology, and biopsy of either the respiratory tract or sections of the gastrointestinal tract. In some situations, it can retrieve foreign objects in the esophagus, stomach, and trachea.
